High School Education

The Secondary Education Department is committed to serving the needs of all students at the secondary level by providing exciting programs that embrace and enhance the ability of all learners. In recent years, North Carolina has adopted stringent course requirements designed to increase student achievement through the North Carolina ABCs Accountability Plan. Secondary classrooms in Cumberland County are increasing student achievement by providing the classroom teachers with resources, training, and support for innovative and dynamic approaches to learning. Successful students prepared for post-secondary experiences come from classrooms with teachers who are sharing in the decision-making at their schools. Toward this effort, recent emphasis has been placed on reducing class sizes at the secondary level and providing teachers the resources needed to continue our efforts towards excellence.

High School Course Selection Guide
The High School Course Selection Guide gives listed descriptions of the courses offered in the Cumberland County Schools. The skills, content, prerequisites, and grade level(s) relative to each offering are provided. All courses follow the most recent version of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.  Course selection should be a carefully planned process following the steps outlined in the “How to Use This Guide” section of the guide. Students should not only choose the courses but also choose the level (standard, honors, AP) most appropriate to their needs, interests, and abilities.   Since not every course is presently being taught at each high school, students should consult the course listings provided at their particular school.

Common Core High School Mathematics Brochure
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Curriculum and Instruction Services math section created a brochure outlining Common Core high school mathematics courses. The brochure, “Preparing North Carolina Students for College and Career Through the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM),” describes the North Carolina math course sequence for high school students and explains the transition to the Math I, Math II, and Math III progression. The brochures were printed by the NCDPI and distributed to LEAs for their use in communicating with parents and students.  The brochure is also available on  the North Carolina Public Schools Website.
